91% of foreign residents in Japan say they are satisfied with life here.

47% say they have experienced discrimination.

Both numbers come from the same survey of 8,874 foreign residents, run by the Immigration Services Agency last autumn.

Both can be true at once. You can like your life here and still have been turned away when you tried to rent an apartment.

That is the most common place it happens: looking for somewhere to live, 19.4%.

The second one is harder to hear. While working, 17.5%. And when people were asked who it came from, strangers were first at 44.8%, and people at work were second, at 35.9%.

Nobody can do much about strangers, and no one controls every landlord.

A workplace is the one place on that list that the people running it can actually change.

どちらの数字も同じ調査から出ています。出入国在留管理庁が昨年の秋、在留外国人8,874人に聞いたものです。

この2つは同時に成り立ちます。ここでの暮らしが気に入っていても、部屋を借りようとして断られたことはありうるのです。

差別を受けた場面でいちばん多かったのが、まさにそこでした。家を探すとき、19.4%です。

2番目は、聞いていて楽ではない数字です。仕事をしているとき、17.5%。そして誰からだったかを聞くと、1位は見知らぬ人で44.8%、2位は職場の関係者で35.9%でした。

見知らぬ人をどうにかすることはできませんし、すべての大家さんを変えることもできません。

その中で職場だけは、そこを運営している人が実際に変えられる場所です。

海外から日本に来た人と一緒に働いているなら、職場がどうだったかを本人に聞いたことはありますか。
