Before you pay a Japanese language school, check one thing

If you are about to pay tuition to a Japanese language school, check one thing first.
Japan is changing how these schools are approved. Under a law that took effect in 2024, a school has to be certified by the Ministry of Education to keep accepting students on a student visa after March 2029.
96 schools have been certified so far. Most of the schools running under the old system have not been, yet.
The latest round, announced in April, is worth reading slowly. 100 schools applied. 32 were certified, 2 were rejected, 13 are still under review, and 53 withdrew before a decision was made.
Not being certified yet does not make a school a bad school. Many are still preparing, and they have until March 2029.
But it is a question you are allowed to ask before you pay.
The Ministry of Education publishes the list of certified schools. Look your school up on it. If it is not there, ask the school where it is in the process and when it expects a decision.

日本は、日本語学校を認める仕組みを変えています。2024年に施行された法律で、2029年3月以降も留学ビザの学生を受け入れ続けるには、文部科学省の認定を受ける必要があります。
これまでに認定を受けたのは96校です。古い仕組みのもとで運営している学校の多くは、まだ認定を受けていません。
4月に発表された直近の回は、ゆっくり読む価値があります。申請は100校。認定32、不認定2、継続審査13、そして53校が結果の前に申請を取り下げました。
まだ認定を受けていないからといって、悪い学校だということにはなりません。準備中の学校は多く、2029年3月までは時間があります。
ただ、学費を払う前に聞いてかまわない質問です。
文部科学省は認定を受けた学校の一覧を公開しています。自分の学校がそこに載っているか確かめてください。載っていなければ、認定の手続きがどこまで進んでいて、いつ結果が出る見込みかを学校に聞いてみてください。
