At seventeen, I moved to the United States alone to chase basketball at the source, with no family and no one I knew waiting for me. I stayed for seventeen years. High school, junior college, a transfer to San Diego State University where I studied business, then a career in the U.S., a relocation to West Virginia, and a job change after that. I lived the full arc of building a life across two cultures, and most of the small, unspoken parts in between.

The other half of what I do. At seventeen I landed in an Oklahoma high school, not as a study-abroad guest but as one of the students, and I finished the season with the team. From there: a junior college in Kansas, a transfer to San Diego State University, a business degree, then a job in Los Angeles, a relocation to West Virginia, and back to Los Angeles again. I worked under American bosses and managed people from other countries.
Most advice about moving to America stops at the application. What actually breaks people comes after: how transfer credits are treated, how far your living costs drift from the estimate, how your home-country experience reads to an American hiring manager, and what your boss there quietly does and doesn’t reward.
