49.8 billion yen: what the Hawks three-peat means for jobs in Fukuoka

498億円:ホークス3連覇が福岡の仕事にもたらすもの

49.8 billion yen!

That is what Fukuoka Prefecture estimates a Japan Series title would be worth to the local economy, and it is great news for anyone who wants to work in Fukuoka. The Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks have just won the Pacific League for the third year in a row, the first time they have done that since the team moved here in 1989.

You could see it in the city the next morning. Victory sales started on September 18. About 1,000 people were lined up outside Daimaru in Tenjin before it opened. Aeon Kyushu ran sales at around 330 stores for three days, and Hakata Hankyu and Iwataya Mitsukoshi joined in too.

This is where it matters for jobs. Around 32.5 billion yen of that estimate comes from extra sales at department stores, supermarkets and other shops, and about 12.6 billion from fans spending on tickets, travel, hotels and food around games at the dome.

The prefecture does not only count what fans spend. It also counts the business that flows to the companies those shops and hotels buy from, and the wages that get spent again. That money lands on companies operating in Fukuoka, and when they get busier, they need more people.

Those are also the industries where many foreign workers are. At the end of October 2025, 85,385 foreign nationals were working in Fukuoka Prefecture, a record high. 15,673 of them worked in wholesale and retail, and 10,907 in hotels and restaurants. That is almost one in three.

If you are new to Fukuoka, the Hawks are also one of the easiest ways into a conversation with coworkers and neighbours. You do not need much Japanese to ask who won last night.
