Fukuoka: third in the world for short commutes

通勤の短さで世界3位、福岡という選択

Only two cities in the world have shorter commutes than Fukuoka: Helsinki and Amsterdam.

That is from the Mori Memorial Foundation's Global Power City Index 2025, which compared 48 major cities. Fukuoka came 3rd, and 1st in Asia. Tokyo was 25th. For getting from the airport to the city centre, Fukuoka came 1st of all 48, at 5 minutes. Tokyo takes 38.

Japan's own numbers say the same. In the government's 2021 survey, the weekday round trip to work or school took 72 minutes in the Kitakyushu-Fukuoka area and 99 minutes in the Kanto area. That is 27 minutes a day, or more than two hours over a five-day week.

If you are choosing where in Japan to build a career, commuting time can be a very important factor, because it is time you get back every working day.
