Every kanji has two kinds of reading
The on reading (shown in katakana) came from Chinese and shows up in compound words. The kun reading (in hiragana) is the Japanese word the kanji was assigned to, and it is usually what you use when the kanji stands alone. Learning one without the other will not let you read, so the fastest route is to learn the example words rather than the readings on their own.
