Make it a number that counts
Planning to work at a good company in Japan? Then at some point someone is going to ask you for a number.
I have said before that the level on a job posting is a filter and not a law. That is still true. But if you are going to put a number on the page, make it one that counts.
19 out of 60. That is the number that fails people whose total was good enough.
The JLPT is on December 6, forty five days from today. Passing needs two things. Your total has to clear the line, and every single section has to clear its own line.
Miss one section by a point and you fail. The official wording is blunt. You are determined to have failed, no matter how high the total score might have been.
For N1, N2 and N3 that floor is 19 out of 60 in each of the three sections. For N4 and N5 it is 38 out of 120 on the first part and 19 out of 60 on listening.
So the question for the next forty five days is not how to get better at Japanese. It is which section is closest to its floor.
You already know which one it is. It is the one you skip when you sit down to study. If you honestly do not know, that is a measurement problem. I have a JLPT style level test on my site that scores you section by section, on the same split as the real exam.
Fix that one and leave the rest alone. A section you are already clearing does not need another forty five days of your attention.
One more thing the exam will never tell you. The JLPT has no speaking section at all. You can hold N1 and have never once been scored on saying a word out loud. I have a speaking assessment for exactly that gap.
And if you are sitting between two levels, take the one you can pass. There is another test in July. A pass you already hold is worth more than a near miss you have to explain.
