The airport is five minutes from the middle of Fukuoka

空港から街のまん中まで5分

Five minutes. That is the subway ride from Fukuoka Airport to Hakata Station. Two stops, 260 yen.

Eleven minutes to Tenjin, which is the other middle of this city.

I bring it up for what it does to a life, not for what it does to a holiday.

If your company has offices in Tokyo or Seoul or Taipei, an airport inside the city is the difference between leaving your desk at four and leaving it at two. If your family is in another country, it is the difference between going home for five days and not going at all. Across years, that becomes how often you actually see people.

It changes a weekend too. Busan and Seoul are both closer to Fukuoka than Tokyo is.

There is a price for it, and this city pays it in buildings. Planes come in low, so aviation rules cap how tall you can build under the flight path.

Fukuoka had to be designated a national strategic special zone in 2014 before that cap could be lifted at all. In November of that year, on Meiji Dori in Tenjin, it moved from about 67 metres to about 76.

That is why the skyline here is not Tokyo's. It is also part of why the middle of town is still something you cross on foot.
