Three summits this week, and one table in Fukuoka

今週の3つの首脳会談と、福岡のひとつのテーブル

This week Japan's prime minister met the US president in New York, and China's president was in Washington on a state visit. Three governments, a lot of headlines, and almost nothing in them that you or I can act on today.

The reactions have been loud and split, from every direction, and I am not going to add another opinion to that pile. What I can tell you is how the same week looked from Fukuoka, where I live.

At our meetup here in Fukuoka, six countries recently sat around the same table: Japan, the United States, Spain, France, Taiwan and Korea. No agenda, no joint statement. One long afternoon and a lot of questions about each other's countries.

I am not going to pretend those two things are the same size. Relations between governments are settled in rooms almost none of us will ever enter.

What a city feels like is decided somewhere else. It comes down to who shows up on a Saturday afternoon, and that is something you can change.

So if you are in Fukuoka, or thinking about coming here, you do not have to wait for anything to improve at the top. Bring your Japanese, wherever it is right now, and take a seat.
