The chips the leaders talked about are made in Kyushu

首脳が話した半導体は、九州で作られている

Semiconductors came up when Japan's prime minister met the US president in New York this week, and they were on the table again when the US and China met in Washington. If you want to see that industry with your own eyes, come to Kyushu.

TSMC's joint venture in Japan, JASM, is in Kumamoto, the prefecture just south of Fukuoka. The first fab opened in February 2024 and the second is under construction. Across the two, the company expects to employ more than 3,400 people in advanced manufacturing, producing more than 100,000 wafers a month at nodes from 40nm down to 6 and 7nm. Total investment across both runs past 20 billion dollars.

There is a problem attached to all of that. The consortium set up in Kyushu to train semiconductor workers reports that science and engineering graduates here get pulled into other industries and to companies outside the region, and that there were never enough of them to begin with.

That is what a shortage looks like from the inside. Not a headline. A hiring plan nobody can fill.

I am not going to tell you a job is waiting for you, because every company sets its own hiring rules. But if this is your field and you have been looking at Japan from a distance, this is the part of the country where the building is actually happening.
