One message, and nine countries came out
On Saturday I put one message into our meetup's LINE group. A few hours later, this was the group, out together in Hakata.
Around ten people. Nine nationalities. The United States, South Africa, France, Sri Lanka, Japan, India, Indonesia, the United Kingdom and Vietnam.
Look at that ratio for a second. Nine countries among ten people, and no single nationality running the room.
And that was one night. More than twenty countries and regions have come through this meetup so far.
That part is not luck. It holds because I pay close attention to the quality of this group, and I keep paying attention. A mixed group does not stay mixed on its own.
We went to the Hakata Riverside Festival, and it is still on. It runs along the Hakata River, between Hakata Ohashi and Meiji Bridge. They build a kawadoko (川床), a deck out over the water. Paper lanterns and bamboo lights, a Hakata food market, festival stalls, traditional performance and live music.
The festival is not really the point though. It could have been almost anything that night. The point is that one message went out, nine countries came, and nobody needed persuading.
If you are in Fukuoka and your weekends are quieter than you expected, that is a solvable problem.
