Japan is not full. It is short.

日本は人でいっぱいではない。足りていない

Japan lost 916,744 Japanese residents in a single year. In the same year, foreign residents passed four million for the first time.

Those are the Ministry of Internal Affairs numbers, counted on January 1 and published in July.

Foreign residents came to 4,031,159. That is up by 353,696 in twelve months. Deaths exceeded births by 923,008, and that gap has widened eighteen years in a row.

Of the forty seven prefectures, exactly one gained Japanese residents. Tokyo, by 12,540. The other forty six all lost.

Now look one level down. The single city that gained the most Japanese residents was not in Tokyo. It was Fukuoka, by 6,347. The prefecture around it still shrank.

That is the real shape of it. The country is not emptying evenly. It is draining into a small number of cities, and the rest is being asked to work with fewer people every year.

If you are thinking about moving here, that is the part that is never in the brochure. You are not arriving into a country that is full. You are arriving into one that is short.

Which is why this needs a strategy and not a hope. Where you land is not a detail you sort out after you arrive. It is the decision everything else sits on.

That is the part I work on with people. And I happen to live in the city that came first on that list.
