The Hakata festival almost everyone walks past

ほとんどの人が通り過ぎる、博多の秋祭り

On October 23 and 24 there is a festival in the middle of Hakata that almost everyone walks past.

Hakata Okunchi (博多おくんち). The autumn festival at Kushida Shrine, the same shrine the famous July floats belong to. It is said to go back about 1,200 years. It is a thank you for the harvest, and it is nothing like July.

Two things to see.

The procession, on the 24th. An ox pulls a cart carrying the shrine's mikoshi through the streets at walking pace. No ticket, no plan, no knowledge required. You stand on the pavement.

The sentoumyou (千灯明). In the evening they put out thousands of small lanterns in the shrine grounds and lay them out as a picture. No stage, no speakers. A dark yard full of small flames.

Here is the part worth saying to anyone new here. Japan has enormous festivals that need tickets, planning and a train. This is not one of them. It is a Friday and a Saturday, it is one subway stop from Hakata Station, and it costs nothing.

If you have lived in Fukuoka for years and never been, that is completely normal. Most people here have walked past it. Go this year.
