Fukuoka answers in 25 languages, for free

福岡は25言語で答えてくれる。無料で

Moving to another country is mostly a list of questions you do not know how to ask yet.

I lived in the United States for 17 years, so I know that list from the inside. That is exactly why I pay attention to services like this one.

Fukuoka City runs a consultation centre for foreign residents that answers those questions in 25 languages. All of it is free.

Residence procedures, work, hospitals, welfare, having a baby, childcare, school. You can walk in, call or email. Lawyers, immigration scriveners and psychologists hold free sessions there as well, and counselling is available in Japanese and English.

It is on the ground floor of the Fukuoka City International Hall in Hakata, open on weekdays from 9:00 to 18:00, with reception until 17:30. The freephone line is 0120-66-1799.

This is worth knowing before you arrive, not after. People put off a move because they picture themselves alone with a form they cannot read, and in this city that particular fear is already taken care of.

Your Japanese does not have to be ready for you to get an answer.
