Doumo does five jobs and almost nobody teaches it properly

「どうも」は5つの仕事をしている

Doumo (どうも) is the most useful word in Japanese and almost nobody teaches it properly.

It is thank you. Hand someone a coffee and you get a doumo back.

It is hello. Pass a neighbour and doumo works at any hour of the day.

It is sorry, inside doumo sumimasen (どうもすみません).

It is somehow, as in doumo taifuu ga kisou da (どうも、台風がきそうだ), somehow it looks like a typhoon is coming.

It is very, sitting in front of another word to turn it up.

One word, five jobs, and the jobs are not even related.

Here is the rule for using it. On its own it is casual. Very casual. A bare doumo to a client or to anyone senior lands as half an effort. Keep the full version in those rooms: doumo arigatou gozaimasu (どうもありがとうございます), doumo sumimasen.

Everywhere else, for the neighbour and the shop and the person holding a door, doumo is enough and it is what you will actually hear.

That is the shape of daily Japanese. The textbook gives you the long polite one, the street runs on the short one, and you need both because they belong to different rooms.
