On last Saturday, I spent the evening at a cafe in Hakata with an incredible group of professionals living here in Fukuoka.

Around the table: people from the United States, Japan, Switzerland, Germany, Taiwan, South Korea, the Netherlands, Indonesia, and India. Nine countries, one table.

Every person had their own story. Different industries, different reasons for choosing to build a life here.

What they all had in common was the same thing I keep noticing in this city: real ambition, and a willingness to figure Japan out instead of just complaining about it.

Conversations like that remind me why I do this work.

Fukuoka doesn't get the attention Tokyo does, but the people quietly building careers and businesses here are some of the sharpest I've met anywhere in Japan.

先週の土曜日、私は博多のカフェで、福岡に住む素晴らしいプロフェッショナルの方々と夜の時間を過ごしました。

テーブルを囲んだのは、アメリカ、日本、スイス、ドイツ、台湾、韓国、オランダ、インドネシア、そしてインド出身の人々でした。9カ国からの参加者が、一つのテーブルに集まりました。

一人ひとりが、それぞれの物語を持っていました。異なる業界、そして、この地で人生を築くことを選んだ異なる理由。

彼ら全員に共通していたのは、私がこの街で常に気づかされていることと同じです。それは、真の野心、そして、不平を言うだけでなく、日本を理解しようとする意欲です。

このような会話は、私がなぜこの仕事をしているのかを思い出させてくれます。

福岡は東京ほど注目されることはありませんが、ここで静かにキャリアやビジネスを築いている人々は、私が日本で出会った中でも最も鋭い方々ばかりです。
