Kakuuchi: the Fukuoka bar that is not a bar
There is a kind of bar in Fukuoka that is not a bar. It is a liquor shop with a corner cleared for drinking, and it is called kakuuchi.
You walk in past the shelves, order at the counter, pay cash for that drink, and stand there with it. Most drinks run 300 to 700 yen. Many shops do a thousand yen set with something to eat.
The style started in Kitakyushu, with shift workers from the steelworks. Bars were shut when their shift ended, but the liquor shop was open, so they drank at the shop. The name comes from drinking off the corner of a square wooden masu cup.
Fukuoka Prefecture's own tourism page points out who these places suit: first timers, people on their own, and groups who have never been. That is unusual to see written down, and it is accurate.
Here is why it matters if your Japanese is still arriving. A kakuuchi has no menu to study, no table service to navigate, and no expectation that you stay. You buy one drink, you stand, you leave when you want. If the person beside you starts talking, you talk. If not, you have still had a good twenty minutes.
Two bits of etiquette. It is not a restaurant, so clear your own glass and plate. And it is not where you settle in for three hours.
One drink, one counter, one conversation you did not plan. That is how a city stops being a place you are visiting.
