The 100 yatai of Fukuoka, and what they do for your Japanese
Fukuoka has around 100 yatai. They are small food stalls that open at night on the pavements and in the parks, a counter with a row of stools around it. No other city in Japan still has them like this.
They almost disappeared. In the 1960s there were more than 400. Then no new operators were allowed in, and the number fell every time an owner retired: 190 by 2000, 155 by 2010. Fukuoka City stopped the slide with an ordinance in 2013 and opened the first public application for stall spaces in 2016, so new people could get in. This year was the sixth round: 102 people applied for 23 spaces.
Here is why I bring it up, whether you are learning Japanese, working here, or new to Fukuoka and still finding your way around. A yatai is a counter with a handful of stools. You sit next to whoever arrived before you, and the owner is standing a metre in front of you all evening. You do not have to invent a reason to talk. The seat is the reason.
You also do not need N2 to sit down. An empty stool, an hour, and a willingness to get the first sentence wrong is enough.
So if you come to Fukuoka, do not spend every evening in restaurants with menus in four languages. Sit at one yatai and let it be awkward for ten minutes. That is the part you will remember, and it is the part that moves your Japanese.
